The network allows photographers to continue marketing their own material, yet benefit from the wider customer base and targeted advertising of EcoPix. As a network member, you receive the full earnings from each photo sale. EcoPix may invoice the client separately for a "search" fee of 10%. If you lodge pictures with us, we deduct a low 25% commission, which just covers administration and advertising costs, and pass the rest on to you. Our main benefit from your participation is our ability to service client needs quickly. Remember that a request from us does not constitute a sale - the sale is made when the customer chooses your picture for publication.
ADVANTAGES of the network: No commission is deducted. You can keep your pictures, use them yourself and sell them to your own customers as well. You can expand your customer base through EcoPix. Your pictures can be professionally edited and captioned for you. You can gain skills and improve your photography because we will give you feedback and suggestions. Use EcoPix as a stepping stone to a commercial agency if you wish - if pictures become unavailable, we just need an e-mail note.
DISADVANTAGES: You must respond quickly to a request - remember, these are your customers. As a network member you are marketting your own pictures so there will be some scanning, phone, email and postage costs.
ADVANTAGES of lodging pictures with EcoPix: Only a low commission is deducted, and you don't have any marketting costs. You don't need to respond to each picture request - EcoPix does the submitting. Your pictures can be professionally edited and captioned for you. You can gain skills and improve your photography because we will give you feedback and suggestions. Payment will be issued by cheque or into your bank account when received by us - not 3 months later!
DISADVANTAGES: You won't have the pictures to market yourself. A contract is needed, which binds you to a three year agreement (EcoPix invests time in captioning, scanning and preparing your images for presentation). With either arrangement, there is no guarantee of sales or income.
Perfect world
EcoPix still requests a normal submission of captioned original transparencies for evaluation. The difference is that we can return your pictures. There is no minimum number required; if you have a handful of great pictures of an interesting, useful subject, we will add them to our database of pictures. We ask for:
1. Original transparencies captioned, addressed, copyrighted and model released. Mount 35mm slides in plastic glassless mounts in slide sleeves. Bigger transparencies need 5"x4" cardboard masks, and can be packed in boxes or sleeves. We will add an EcoPix sticker to those selected. Make sure you include e-mail contacts.
Transparencies must be publication quality, that is: perfectly exposed, with highlight and shadow detail and consist predominantly of mid tones; well lit; pin sharp; tightly and strongly composed; and flawless (no scratches etc). Most importantly, every picture MUST ILLUSTRATE something. If you can't think of a caption for the image, don't submit it. All images need to be comprehensively and accurately captioned, including species binomials.
2. Include a disk or sheet of paper with your captions listed, so we can include your subject keywords in the keyword index.
Real world
We know all about how time consuming editing and captioning slides can be. If you feel your collection contains useful images which you would like to see used, but don't have the time or knowledge to edit and caption them, EcoPix may do it for you. Obviously, you will have to supply details that only you could know.

Photographers who are serious about marketing their art are encouraged to submit pictures or tearsheets for a dedicated personal page at EcoPix.net. This is a showcase of your work to specialist editors and picture researchers worldwide. You can have a link to your own e-mail address if you are connected, and your own web site if you have one. The cost for a normal page (up to 200kb) is AUS$55 per year, or entirely free if you participate in the EcoPix marketing network. However, the same high photographic standards apply in these pages. We are launching this service now, so be one of the first! View a mockup of a dedicated page which indicates the general idea of what yours might contain:

EcoPix needs models from time to time for either ecotourism (being a tourist, holiday-maker, outdoor recreationist etc.) or conservation and environmental subjects (planting trees, recycling etc.). If this is your way to further the awareness of natural heritage or environmental stewardship, you may like to contribute. Unless on a commercial assignment, remuneration is only by a percentage of future sales, or a free trip.
However, the same high standards are required as with the photography - models need to be fit and photogenic, with an outdoor look, have the ability to relate to the camera, and have some basic grooming, makeup and clothing sense. Email to make a general enquiry or go on a register of interested people.
To further the role of photography in the awareness of natural heritage and environmental stewardship, EcoPix encourages young photographers to develop their skills and portfolios in these fields through a limited number of small grants. If you are under 18 years of age and have a suitable photographic project in mind but are unable to finance it, EcoPix may assist with film and/or travel expenses to the maximum value of AUS$300.
