Sunlit native Bluegrass
Sunlit native Bluegrass Dicanthium on Savannah (grassy) woodland on basaltic black soil downs Goonderoo Bush Heritage Reserve, near Emerald, Central Queensland, Australia, which preserves flora, fauna and ecology of inland woodlands and forests threatened over much of the inland by land clearing, and native pasture threatened by introduced species. CQ55.6s
Blossoms of Pink Fringe Myrtle Blossoms of Pink Fringe Myrtle Calytrix longiflora, an understorey shrub which flowers profusely in early spring to summer, adding colour and fragrance to open eucalypt forests in transition area between mesic coastal vegetation types and the arid flora of the inland plains, Thrushton National Park, southwestern Queensland, Australia.6x6cm SW20.11e  Acacia conferta blossoms
Prolific blossoms of the shrub wattle Acacia conferta in open woodland, western Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia, an inland region in which broadacre clearing of the native forests and woodlands is continuing. S113.18s
Old fig tree roots around fence
Old growth roots of a strangling fig Ficus sp. spread across a pioneer cattle yard fence on historic Rosedale Station, Queensland instead of the living trunks of forest trees normally used as a host. CQ55.4s
Germinating fern fronds
Unfolding fern frond (Pteropsida) showing characteristic fern growth, and the productivity of a boggomoss (artesian fed) ground spring, Dawson River, Queensland, Australia. Boggomosses are unique wetland types with rare or isolated plant and animal species. CQ30.19s
lily in grassy woodland
A showy Crinum lily adorns the undisturbed floor of mixed woodland after spring rains at Goonderoo, central Queensland, Australia. Such woodlands have been cleared over vast areas in Queensland, destroying the rich ecology of the woodlands and their diverse flora and fauna, but natural cycles are preserved in this Bush Heritage Trust reserve. CQ28.8s
lilies on floodplain, Thompson River
Field of lilies Crinum: Amaryllidaceae on a creek flat in Gidyea Acacia cambagei woodland, Lochern National Park, Thomson River floodplain, outback Queensland, Australia. Lochern preserves plant communities of the Channel Country including coolibah woodland, bluebush shrubland, gidyea, mulga and other semi-arid woodlands, and Mitchell grass plains. In the dry climate, the lilies survive droughts by a deep bulb, sprouting and flowering after rains.5x4inch SW26.1e
Deciduous bark of a Cabbage Gum
Deciduous bark of Cabbage Gum Eucalyptus papuana in open Gum/Bloodwood/Ironbark woodland with understorey of native grasses and currant bush Carissa ovata, Goonderoo Bush Heritage reserve, central Queensland, Australia. Such native inland woodlands are being extensively cleared, but this is preserved. CQ29.23s
Nardoo and Azolla in wetland
Nardoo Marsilea hirsuta and Azolla A. filiculoides rubra (red-brown) aquatic ferns on a floodplain wetland, Dawson River valley, Central Qld., Australia. The flood-plains and riparian forests of the Dawson River upstream of Nathan Gorge contain unique wetlands, rare species. CQ29.12s
Mangrove hypocotyl sprouts through leaf litter
Hypocotyl (seedling stalk) of the Grey Mangrove Avicennia marina taking root on a mangrove shoreline Moreton Bay Marine Park (& Ramsar Wetland), SE Qld., Australia. This and many other mangrove species are "vivaporous", ie, the fruits germinate while still on the tree. The seedling can float, remaining viable for months until washed to a suitable site for rapid establishment. C96.24s
Coastal swampforest of paperbarked teatree
Coastal swampforest of paperbarked teatree Melaleuca spp. with mat rush Lomandra sp. and sedge ground cover, Baffle Creek floodplain, central Queensland, Australia. Baffle Ck is last major coastal river system in Qld with intact gallery forest, floodplain wetlands & unregulated by dams, weirs, or barrages, allowing fish to migrate freely upstream to breed. CQ73.23s
rock orchid beside waterfall
Wild orchid Orchidaceae clinging to the continually wet cliffs of a waterfall, escarpment of Springbrook Plateau, in Springbrook NP, a World Heritage area in the Border Ranges, SE Queensland, Australia. C94.14s
Acacia blossom
Prolific blossoms of the shrub wattle Acacia conferta in open woodland on deeply weathered Cretaceous sandstones of the Kumberilla Formation, western Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia, an inland region where broadacre clearing of native forests, woodlands continues. S113.23s
Decorticating deciduous bark of Smooth-barked Apple
Decorticating deciduous bark of Smooth-barked Apple or Rusty Gums Angophora costata at the end of spring, produces brightly coloured fresh bark, which gradually fades to light purplish grey, in mixed Australian woodlands and forests on sandstone.5x4inch SW16.6e
Spreading limbs of mature river red gum, Cooper Creek
Spreading limbs of a mature River Red Gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis on the bank of Cooper Creek near Windorah, Channel Country, SWest Qld, Australia, where it forms by the confluence of Thomson & Barcoo Rivers, the only place in the world where two rivers form one creek. Proposals to pump irrigation water for broadacre cotton caused public outcry, as water flow in this arid region is insufficient for irrigation and protection of natural values.5x4inch SW23.6e
Ironwood tree
Flowering Beefwood tree Grevillea striata in dry low open mulga/box woodland, Currawinya Nat.Park, outback SW Qld., Australia. Beefwoods have red, beautifully grained timber used in turning, and an important nectar source for native birds and insects. S104.12
Cordyline fruits in Irian Jayan rainforest
Rainforest fruits (Cordyline sp.) glow bright red in the dark understory of montane rainforest, Yapen Island, Irian Jaya, competing for the attention of animals which might disperse the seeds for the plant. Many insects, birds, mammals following the fruiting. I74.4s
Old growth river red gum, Paroo River
Ancient River Red Gum tree Eucalyptus camaldulensis stands beside an inland river, the Paroo in Currawinya National Park, western Queensland, Australia. A refuge for wildlife in dry times, when in flood the Paroo fills ephemeral wetlands and lakes with life-giving river water from rainfall hundreds of kilometres upstream, creating some of the most important wetland and waterbird habitat in Australia. Old hollow trees standing in the floodwaters then provide nesting places for waterfowl. S93.22s
Aquatic plant flowers on Dawson River wetland
Rich aquatic plant life including Ottelia ovalifolia (white), Azolla fern A. filiculoides rubra and Fringed Waterlilies on a Palm Tree Creek floodplain wetland, Dawson River valley, Central Queensland, Australia. The floodplains and riparian forests of the Dawson River upstream of Nathan Gorge wilderness area contain unique wetlands, rare plants and important wildlife habitat. CQ29.1,3s
Leafless Caustic vine
Caustic Vine Sarcostemma australe, an unusual leafless scrambling plant, in dry Mulga Acacia aneura woodland, Currawinya NP, outback SW Qld., Australia. Green stems photosynthesise, adaptation to minimise transpiration of water in its arid habitats. S100.13s
Stilt-rooted Mangroves
Stilt-rooted Mangrove Rhizophora stylosa on a tidal creek estuary, Baffle Creek, Central Queensland, Australia. The stilt-like roots help absorb oxygen which is deficient in the waterlogged, reducing conditions below ground, and support the trees in the soft, shifting substrates, subject to wave and current action, The tangled roots help stabilise the ground and provide nursery habitat for juvenile fish, prawns and other marine life, of ecological and commercial importance.6x4.5 CQ27.1e
